October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October New Zealand marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Kiwi women, affecting approximately 1 in 9 women over their lifetime.

At Katikati Medical Centre, our clinical team is committed to supporting our community across Katikati, Waihi Beach, and the wider Western Bay of Plenty with preventive screenings, prompt clinical evaluations, and ongoing care. When breast cancer is detected early, the 10-year survival rate is 92–95%.

  • Who is eligible? Women aged 45 to 74 in New Zealand are eligible for free screening mammograms every two years through BreastScreen Aotearoa.
  • Why mammograms? Mammograms can detect tiny changes in breast tissue years before they can be felt by hand.
  • How to enrol or book:
    • Call 0800 270 200 to enrol or book your appointment
    • You can also speak with our practice nurses or your GP at Katikati Medical Centre, and we will assist with enrolment and referral.
    • Mobile screening units and clinic facilities regularly service the Bay of Plenty region (including Tauranga and a mobile clinic in Katikati).

All women, regardless of age, should be familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. Check regularly using the Look, Feel, Check approach:

What to look for:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit area.
  • Changes in breast size, shape, or contour.
  • Skin dimpling, puckering, or redness.
  • Inverted or pulled-in nipples, or unusual nipple discharge.
  • Persistent pain in a specific area of the breast not related to menstrual cycles.

If you notice any unusual breast changes – even if your last mammogram was normal do not wait for your next routine screen. Book a consultation with one of our GP’s at Katikati Medical Centre promptly. Most breast changes turn out to be benign (non-cancerous), but a quick clinical assessment provides clarity and peace of mind.

The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Pink Ribbon Street Appeal takes place across mid-October. Community donations fund vital research, clinical trials, medical education, and patient support grants across Aotearoa. Look out for local volunteers in Katikati town centre, or donate online.
