Alarmingly, measles cases are on the rise in New Zealand.
Measles is NOT HARMLESS. 1 out of every 1000 peole infected in developed countries like NZ will die. Common complications include ear infections, diarrhoea, and pneumonia. In New Zealand, 15 measles cases out of 100 are hospitalised. 1 in 1000 cases develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), of these 15% die and one third are left with permanent brain damage.
Measles can also increase the risk of complications in pregnancy – eg miscarriage and premature labour.
The risk of very serious disease is greatest for those under 5 and those over 20, and for anyone with a weakened immune system. Such people are often unable to be immunised and rely on protection from those around them being immunised.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles. The vaccine is safe and effective and FREE for anyone under 18 regardless of your immigration status, and for anyone else eligible for NZ funded healthcare.
If you aren’t sure of your vaccination status or know you are unvaccinated and want a vaccine, please book in with our nurses. Call 07 549 0411.
